Overview
Ultra-sensitive airborne integrated magnetometer system powered by QuSpin QTFM Gen-2 atomic total-field magnetometer sensors
Unique system design allows for flying with extremely low surface-to-sensor clearance starting from just a couple of dozen centimeters. If the sensor touches the ground or an obstacle/vegetation that will not lead to the drone’s crash. That capability is extremely important for searching for small UXO items over fields with vegetation.
Self-foldable sensor mount allows easy take-off and landing without excess requirements for drone operator qualification, as it is for magnetic sensors on suspension cords.
System variants
MagNIMBUS comes in two possible configurations:
- Gradiometer. This configuration simplifies data processing and makes a magnetometer base station not necessary. An additional benefit gradiometer makes it possible to conduct magnetic surveys in proximity to the sources of EM fields like powerlines.
- Configuration with a single sensor with a foldable mount. Detection capabilities are the same as for the gradiometer setup, but require more experienced specialists for data processing, magnetometer base station is recommended in some cases.
Main components of the system
- Recommended drone: DJI M400/M350 RTK/M300 RTK. The standard kit comes with all mountings/cables for these drones; sets for other types of drones, including Pixhawk-based, are available by request.
- Foldable mount with built-in QuSpin QTFM Gen-2 magnetic field sensor.
- Mast with QuSpin QTFM Gen-2 sensor for vertical gradiometer configuration.
- SkyHub’s onboard computer acts as a datalogger for magnetic field sensors and implements terrain following mode for DJI drones.
- Altimeter (laser or radar).
- UgCS Expert flight planning/management software.
Recommended software for data processing
- for in-field and quick processing: GeoHammer Pro
- for large-scale projects and complex processing: Geosoft Oasis montaj
UXO/landmines detection note
The system is capable of detecting a range of items, starting from hand grenades (the estimated sensor-target distance for detecting an object such as the F1 hand grenade is 0.5 m) to big UXO like aerial bombs at a distance of a few meters.
While magnetometers can detect some types of landmines (for example, M15, M6, TM-62M anti-tank mines; M16, PROM-1, OZM-3, OZM-4, OZM-72 anti-personnel mines, and similar types with considerable amounts of ferrous metal), landmine search is not a direct application of magnetometers, as they can’t detect most types of modern landmines. That means that the system should be used to confirm the absence of landmines (and small ordnance) in certain area but it can be a valuable asset during Non-Technical Survey (NTS) or Technical Survey (TS) to confirm the presence of UXO/landmines with a considerable amount of ferrous metals.
Ordering
As MagNIMBUS is a very versatile, customisable magnetometer system, it may require different components to be used with a particular drone. Also, different configurations are available. Please request the quote to get a tailored specification for equipment, software, and services.
