Challenge

Green Sky was approached by a national client to conduct a dilapidation report of a building’s facade in the vicinity of Sydney airport, which is a restricted airspace. Due to the restricted airspace, a Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) approval was required to conduct the operation. The location was situated in the approach/departure path of the airport, which added an extra layer of complexity to the operation.

Process

Green Sky conducted a thorough Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS). The JSA and SWMS were submitted to CASA as part of the application process for the required approvals. The documentation included a site survey to identify potential hazards and the cordoning off of a safe area to prevent the movement of the public within the flight operation path.
After obtaining the necessary approvals from CASA, the operation was scheduled for an early Sunday morning to help mitigate identified risks during the planning phase. The Pilot in Command (PIC) was always accompanied by a spotter to assist in the operation of both pedestrian and vehicle traffic.
CASA issued an approval instrument allowing Green Sky to conduct the necessary flight operations within the approach/departure paths of the Sydney airport.

Results

The data captured by Green Sky was provided to the national client in the form of high-resolution photos and video of the facade. The photos were used as evidence in the dilapidation report, which helped the client identify potential damage to the facades prior to construction works occuring. The operation was completed safely and efficiently, with no disruption to the airport's operations or the safety of public.
